Giant Clams at Makogai

On Makogai Island ( 30 km to the north east of Ovalau) is a breeding station for giant clams. Some clam species are threatened in Fiji due to over fishing so there are successful efforts undertaken by Fiji Fisheries to breed and reintroduce clams to Fiji reefs.

Clams are injected with Serotonin which will release pheromones and cause spawning in clams within proximity in about 30 min after injection.
